Dave Thomas was the manager of a barbecue restaurant and was going nowhere with his life. Meanwhile, his boss had tried to start up a new concept: a fried chicken restaurant. But it had flopped and shut down. Thomas asked his boss, if he could re-open the chicken restaurant and make a success of it, could he be part owner? His boss told him that if he could get him his money back, he could have restaurant. So Dave Thomas threw his entire life in re-building this chicken restaurant. He even lived in it for a while. He invented the side dishes, and he experimented with the marketing, like a red and white striped bucket.
The restaurant he turned around and franchised? No, not Wendy’s. It was Kentucky Fried Chicken. Wendy’s came later, after he sold out his first chain.
